ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
We never set out to write a 'musical' or put on a stage production. We merely began with a vision of a broken mother singing at the foot of the cross, having watched her son be brutally murdered. A simple song emerged, that in some ways tried to capture not only the feeling of deep loss and grief, but also the sense that this was part of God's plan, shrouded in the reality of a moment that was just too painful to bear.
We discovered that as we looked through the eyes of Mary, our own view of Jesus was transformed. The story of Jesus is well known by Christian and non-Christians alike, whether it is understood as a factual historical event or a mystical story, but is important for us to also remember that these events happened within and alongside the lives of ordinary, everyday people. These people experienced lives comparable to our own, with the same doubts, struggles, joys, relationships and turmoil that exist within each of our lives today.
As we began to look through the eyes of the people who experienced parts of Jesus' life alongside him, it enabled us to form a 3D view of the Gospel, to see reflections of our own lives and character within them. Understanding their failings, successes, doubts and fears actually revealed our own. The Gospel story came to life, and we suddenly realised that this was more than a few songs, but the emerging of a stage production that would allow us all, through the use of song, poetry and theatre, to 'take part' in the Easter story.
